    Polyphemus Silkmoth

Antheraea polyphemus One of the two giant silkmoths we get here on the island, the other one is the Ceanothus Silkmoth. Just released this male and another one. Raised them last summer and it's there time to emerge. To attract them put out a black light for the night, they will be flying over the next couple of weeks. They like to fly a couple of hours before sunrise. They don't always hang around the light, they will fly in then out again a few times during the night, sometimes you will find them roosting close by in the morning so you have to look around. First time I seen one I thought it was a bat, that's how big they are.

I like taking seed pictures. I was drawn to these ones by the color variations and texture. I have posted the full resolution picture so you can have a look. 1 x 5 stack and stitch focus stack, 29868 x 9713 pixels, 83" x 27" @360 dpi. Shot with the G9 in High Resolution mode outputting jpg's then stacked with Zerene Stacker and used I.C.E. to combine the pictures. Lens used was the Nikon 200 f4 Micro @ f8.

Paonias excaecata It can be hard to get the hawkmoths to settle down and I haven't had much luck with them this year, this one was roosting for the day and nice and still, didn't even move while I did a stack and stich of 3 x 4.
